Battle for Democracy Fund

Battle for Democracy Fund is fueled by real social activation – in-person conversations with people who are already connected to each other. It's the old school social networks like churches and community groups – through neighbor-to-neighbor conversations (not robocalls or out of town canvassers) that help transform forgotten voters into lifelong leaders, who, in turn, activate the people around them.

Early Stages

This project started off without a name, this made it important that I focused on an icon rather than using the letters so that I didn’t lose time. This project was pro-bono, so not everyone was included in on the project. I was tasked with leading the charge for the identity. This gave me the opportunity to present as much work as I wanted to our internal team. Those sound board sessions of seeing what the rest of the team is feeling are so helpful for me.

I wanted the mark to convey amplification of POC’s (People Of Color’s) voice as well as convey a sense urgency to donate to the initiative. The mark couldn’t be too patriotic either because this organization is rebelling against our current democracy.

Exploration is EVERYTHING.

Inspired by the BLM movement and fighting for democracy and justice, I merged a power fist with a chat bubble to represent giving a voice and the power to the people.

This mark fuses a ballot box with a shield to represent the protection of voters rights that BDF fights for.

This logo uses fonts that were utilized in wartime posters. I chose this route because of the organizations “boots on the ground” methods.

The mark combines a chat bubble and a megaphone, signifying voice amplification.

The font used is Futura, which references older activist messaging. The color blocking overlay was inspired by the background shapes in 50’s logos, the shape varies a lot. The overlay creates a transparency, this resembles being bipartisan – the fusion of democrats (blue) and republicans (red), creating purple.
